In 1997, JGC landed a contract to construct a petrochemical plant for Bataan Polyethylene Corporation of the Philippines. This project involved the construction of a plant using technology developed by BP Chemicals to produce high and low density polyethylene according to demand. The plant was built on Bataan Peninsula located 150 km west of the capital, Manila, with the aim of meeting the anticipated growing demand for polyethylene in the Philippines.
To achieve quick delivery in 25 months, JGC made steady progress in carrying the work on time, but the Asian Financial Crisis triggered by the rapid fall in the value of the Thai baht in 1997 caused a variety of problems, including its effect on on-site construction. At one point, there were even fears that the project would be suspended. But even under such harsh conditions, the project members at JGC came together in solidarity in striving to resolve the issues and succeeded in completing the project.
